Ernie Johnson Says This Season Is His Last on Inside the NBA After 37 Years, Leaving Charles Barkley in Tears
Ernie Johnson, the longtime host of "Inside the NBA," said Wednesday that the 2026-27 season will be his last on the show. He is ending a 37-season run at the desk of one of sports television's most popular studio programs.
The 70-year-old broadcaster announced the decision in a video posted on social media. He then discussed it on air with co-hosts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal, and Barkley became visibly emotional.
"This will be my last season," Johnson said. "Totally my decision. It's just time."
Johnson said he has always looked at hosting the show as a privilege rather than an obligation.
"This is my 37th year, and I've long described it as a get-to job," he said.
He said he long ago set a test for when he would walk away. "I've always vowed that if that ever became more of a challenge than it is a joy, then I'll know it's time to step away," Johnson said. "I know after 37 seasons, it's time."
Johnson said health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family weighed on the decision.
"For nearly two years now, I've dealt with heart issues, had bypass surgery 14 months ago," he said.
He stressed that he is doing well and that the decision was not ordered by a doctor. "I feel great. So this isn't a case where my doctor said, 'you need to stop working,'" Johnson said.
He said his health scare made him value time at home even more.........
