The question of which lab — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or xAI — will "win" artificial intelligence in 2027 has no published answer. The four are shipping products on different calendars, and their chief executives spent part of September agreeing, in public, that the race itself should slow.

Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive, wrote in an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier" that the industry had to reduce the risk that "something goes seriously wrong." "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," he wrote. He asked for three steps: external evaluators with "employee-like access," common safety standards, and international coordination on the rate of progress. Sam Altman of OpenAI replied on X that "committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same." Elon Musk of xAI........
