When I spoke with Megan Podzorov, Chief People Officer at Janus Henderson Investors, she emphasized that developing high-potential talent does not happen by accident. It is identified deliberately, developed carefully, and supported through exposure that accelerates perspective.

Janus Henderson is a global asset manager overseeing more than $493 billion in assets and employing over 2,000 people worldwide with a long-term investment mindset. In a business defined by disciplined decision-making, Podzorov applied a similar mindset to people.

“We are intentional about who we identify and how we develop them,” Podzorov explained.

Identification is a deliberate, multi-stage process.

At Janus Henderson, high potential is not defined by a single moment or metric. It is identified through a combination of business talent reviews, calibration discussions, and cross functional assessments.

“If you believe someone is ready for broader impact, that belief needs to be tested,” Podzorov shared. “It should stand up to challenge and discussion.”

High potential talent is evaluated not only based on output, but on sustained performance, leadership potential, and roles where accelerated development would have the greatest organizational impact. This is not a single nomination or manager-led process. It is an integrated, cross-business view of talent.

According to research published in Harvard Business Review, organizations with disciplined leadership development pipelines significantly outperform peers in long-term value creation. At Janus Henderson, potential is treated as something to be developed with care.
