The AI App-Builder Economy Is Coming for Enterprise Software
AI can not only help with work. It can shape the work itself.

Enterprise software has always had a problem: It rarely matches how work really gets done.
An organization buys an application to help it manage finance, HR, procurement, supply chain, or sales. The application handles the standard processes. Then the real work begins. Teams add policies, exceptions, approvals, reports, handoffs, spreadsheets, and tribal knowledge. The “official” workflow and the actual workflow begin to drift apart.
That gap is exactly where the first wave of enterprise artificial intelligence has run into limits.
Most of it has been layered on top of existing software in the form of copilots, AI assistants, or other AI add-ons. Helpful, yes, but still constrained. A summary saves time. A draft response beats a blank page. A chatbot that answers policy questions may cut ticket volume. But these tools mostly help people work with systems that were never built to understand the state of the business, optimize processes, and autonomously execute the highest-value actions within defined controls.

The next shift is more interesting. Instead of asking software vendors to predict every workflow, organizations are starting to build AI automations and agentic applications that deliver business outcomes around the work they know best. The enterprise is moving from using AI to help with work to using AI to shape and complete the work itself.
It is the difference between asking an assistant for help and applying expertise so that the system can own the process. And that matters most in the tasks where business runs on judgment, timing, and context: closing the books, fixing supplier delays, reconciling exceptions, routing approvals, preparing audits, resolving service issues.
What is emerging is an app-builder economy for enterprise AI. Business users, enterprise developers, and systems integrators are beginning to turn domain knowledge into AI automations and agentic applications that live closer to the workflow, the data, and the decision.
