Women Can Freeze Their Eggs for Free Through This Startup. Here’s Why Critics Are Concerned

Cofertility says its egg-sharing model makes egg freezing accessible to more women. Critics argue the tradeoffs aren’t always so clear.

A Los Angeles-based startup will cover a woman’s full costs to freeze her eggs—but there’s a catch. 

Cofertility, which describes itself as an “ethical egg donation platform”, offers women the chance to freeze their eggs for and store them for up to ten years, free of charge, as long as they donate half of the retrieved eggs to a family experiencing challenges with pregnancy in a model known as “egg sharing.” Under one option, a donor is matched with a family before her retrieval.
