The search giant bought internal emails, HR logs, and code to train its models. Now workers—and their unions—are fighting back.

Google may have won its $20 million bid to acquire vast reserves of bankrupt Spirit Airline’s business and employee information for use training its Large Language Models. But that doesn’t mean the company and other tech giants won’t continue facing pushback from critics who object to the tech sector using—yet again—third party individuals’ data to develop artificial intelligence tools that increasingly risk automating other people’s jobs away.

Meanwhile, some opponents argue the sale of Spirit’s data not only risks compromising its own employees’ privacy, but may also eventually inspire some solvent businesses to consider selling their non-sensitive data to AI firms........
