I Just Learned What Artichokes Are Made Of, And It's Neither Veg Nor Fruit

Thistle shock you (sorry).

We’ve written before at HuffPost UK about the fact that capers and cloves are neither fruits, roots, nor veg.

And it turns out that pineapples are technically a syncarp, or a bunch of fused berries, too. The “scales” you can see on pineapples’ skin show the conjunction of multiple flowers.

So what about artichokes, the rather odd-looking green plant so important to Mediterranean cooking?

Those aren’t fruits or veggies either, it seems.
