Record-high support for rejoining the EU. But what now?

The University of Strathclyde’s Professor Sir John Curtice usually has something interesting to say.

And, characteristically, his comments published over the weekend on the public’s views on Brexit these days and what might happen next did not disappoint.

His analysis of the numbers is always captivating.

Sir John observed that support for rejoining the European Union was the highest since the Brexit vote in June 2016.

Talking to The Independent, Sir John said that 61% of Britons now say they would vote to rejoin the European Union, compared with 39% who declare they would stay out.

Sir John said: “That is the highest figure that it has been, as an average over any extended period of time, all the way back to 2016.”

And he had some fascinating observations in relation to this.

Notably, he highlighted the fact that public opinion had shifted in spite of a relative silence from various political parties.

Sir John also flagged the part played by younger people reaching voting age in the shift in public opinion.

He observed that we now have 10 years’ worth of people who were too young to vote in the 2016 referendum and “they are very heavily in favour of rejoining”. And some older voters, who were more likely to vote for Brexit, have died.

Sir John said: “Public opinion has shifted quite considerably, partly for demographic reasons, even though prior to 2024, apart from the Greens and the nationalists, nobody was arguing in favour of rejoining.”
