Why assisted dying bill is a major milestone for Humanists
This morning I am giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament health committee on Liam McArthur’s proposed assisted dying law for Scotland.
For Humanist Society Scotland this is a major milestone on a decades-long journey. Humanism as an ethical position supports secularism, human rights, and bodily autonomy, opposing religious dogma and privilege. This encompasses the right for terminally ill people to end their lives on their own terms, free from pain, indignity, and trauma. Humanist Society Scotland was formed in 1989 and ever since then we have campaigned for the legalisation of assisted dying.
Now, Scottish lawmakers have a chance to make legal assisted dying a reality. Only those living with advanced and progressive terminal conditions would be eligible to apply. And there would be rigorous tests to assess mental capacity........
