Online haters need to belt up over sale of 'fairytale' castle on Scottish island
Kinloch Castle on Rum is up for sale. Maybe the keyboard warriors and assorted ill-informed outsiders should belt up, says islander and Herald columnist Elle Duffy
Most mornings on Rum start the same way. The light comes in across the bay, and someone will be walking the main road through the village, a road that takes you right past Kinloch Castle. They may be heading to the school, to the shop, to the pier, to work, or just out with the dog. For those of us who live here, the castle is not some distant curiosity. It’s part of where we live.
It is strange, then, to open social media and see hundreds, maybe thousands of people arguing about it - and in most cases, arguing about us. The castle was officially put back on the market at the end of August, for the rather reasonable-looking price tag of £750,000. And the headlines were aplenty; ‘Fancy buying your own fairytale Scottish castle?’, one read. ‘You can own a castle for less than a London house’, another printed.
And amongst the thousands of comments tagging friends and pitching a whip around to live out Outlander fantasies, there was anger and opinions. Thoughts on who should buy it, on what should be done with it. And, overwhelmingly, on why the community here is supposedly........
