With the arrival of Muharram al-Haram, a great portion of the world’s attention turns—as it has always turned—towards that momentous event which stands among the most profound tragedies in human history. It was on the plains of Karbala that the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Sayyiduna Hussain ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), together with his small but devoted band of companions, offered a sacrifice in the cause of truth and justice so extraordinary and so unparalleled that history has seldom witnessed anything comparable.

Perhaps this is why, when we look across the vast panorama of history, we find mighty rulers and celebrated conquerors whose names once thundered across continents and before whom nations trembled. Yet time has either erased them from memory or reduced them to mere footnotes in forgotten chronicles. The memory of Hussain ibn Ali and his companions, however, has followed a different course. Fourteen centuries have passed, yet that memory neither fades nor diminishes. It deepens, it grows, and it shines with ever-increasing radiance.Many reasons may be offered for this enduring greatness. People have understood and expressed it in different ways according to their knowledge, devotion, and perspective, and they will continue to do so. Yet at the heart of it all lies a timeless truth: when a human being binds his life to eternal values—or rises to such spiritual heights that he becomes the living embodiment of those values—then no storm, no tempest, and no tide........
