Rethinking the Smart City
The concept of Smart City entails improvement of Quality of life and Citizen services by way of Digital Infrastructure, Mobility, Sustainability and Governance. It aims to create sustainable and resilient urban ecosystems. Smart City Mission stipulates “give a decent quality of life to their citizens and apply smart solutions to improve services and infrastructure”.
Srinagar Smart City lists its vision as “transforming Srinagar into an eco-friendly, resilient and socio-economically vibrant city that celebrates its natural and cultural heritage creating harmony and opportunities for all”. In case of Srinagar, the focus is to blend heritage and tourism into the concept, also including waterfront development.
SSCL lists two major action areas among its features (i) Creating walk able localities – reduce congestion, air pollution and resource depletion. (ii) Preserving and developing open spaces – parks, playgrounds, and recreational spaces in order to enhance the quality of life of citizens. Srinagar has 161 projects valued at Rs 3,634 crore, with 157 projects (Rs 3,532 crore) completed and four projects (Rs 102 crore) still under implementation.
