Unmasking the Appeal

On the eve of World No Tobacco Day 2026, we are reminded of a silent yet persistent threat that continues to affect our homes, our health, and our future. This year’s theme, “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” given by the World Health Organization, calls upon all of us to look beyond the illusion that tobacco is harmless, fashionable, or merely a matter of personal choice. In reality, it is a carefully packaged danger that carries addiction, disease, and suffering behind its deceptive appeal.

The 2026 campaign particularly focuses on exposing how tobacco and nicotine industries deliberately design and repackage products to attract younger generations. Modern nicotine products are increasingly being presented as stylish, technologically advanced, and socially acceptable while concealing their addictive nature and harmful health effects.

The campaign rests on three important pillars. First, it seeks to expose industry strategies such as the use of synthetic nicotine, nicotine salts, and newer chemical formulations that are specifically engineered to increase addiction potential while appearing sophisticated and modern. Second, it advocates for stronger policy measures, including complete bans on attractive product flavours, stricter restrictions on digital and social media advertising, and implementation of plain packaging regulations. Third, it aims to empower young people through awareness and education so they can recognize manipulative marketing tactics and access evidence-based........
