Achan: 361 Crore Project

What more could people of Srinagar have asked for when the Government announced setting up of a scientific waste management project at the city’s garbage dump at Achan.

The decision generated a ray of hope for people of Achan and other areas of Srinagar who have been bearing the brunt of pungent smell from Achan landfill site due to unscientific garbage disposal. Taking note of people’s miseries, the Council of Ministers headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accorded approval for the establishment of an 800 TPD Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Project at Achan, Srinagar, at an estimated cost of Rs 361 crore.

The decision was taken during the 6th meeting of the Council of Ministers with the objective of strengthening scientific waste management infrastructure in Srinagar. The project is aimed to ensure sustainable disposal and processing of municipal solid waste in an environmentally responsible manner. The project envisages enhancing waste processing capacity of Srinagar city through modern and efficient systems for collection, segregation, treatment and disposal of solid waste. After completion, the project is designed to improve sanitation standards, reduce environmental pollution and contribute towards cleaner and healthier urban surroundings.

CM Omar Abdullah, who is a nature lover, believes that establishment of the facility at Achan will support long-term urban planning and environmental sustainability efforts. Besides address the growing waste management requirements of the city in view of rapid urban expansion........
