Christopher Gusz: Why are devastating transit cuts even up for discussion?

Metro Vancouver transit is at a crisis point. Buses are overcrowded, passengers getting left at bus stops (pass-ups) are common, and many parts of the region see less transit service than they had pre-COVID.

We should be fighting to expand the network to match demand, but that’s not where we are. We’re fighting for the network to exist. Without new funding announced by April, TransLink is facing an impending Spring 2025 deadline for new funding that could see half of all bus routes in the region eliminated and a substantial reduction in all other transit service.

What could this look like for transit riders? More than half a million people would no longer be within walking distance of transit, and 175,000 jobs, or more, would no longer be accessible by transit. While the cuts to bus would be most severe, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and HandyDART will also see cuts of up to 35 percent.

The impacts of these cuts would be disproportionately felt by low-income individuals, visible minorities, youth, and seniors—with up to 33 per cent of those populations no longer living within........
