Tata Sons Reappoints Chairman, Eyes Listing Despite Opposition From Largest Shareholder
The turmoil at Tata Sons, the holding company of India’s $180 billion (revenue) Tata group, took a curious turn today when its board approved a five-year extension of chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s term, despite opposition from Tata Trusts, its largest shareholder, represented on the board by its chairman Noel Tata. The reappointment comes a month after Chandrasekaran had said in a public statement that he would be stepping down in February 2027 when his current term ends. The board also resolved to comply with the Reserve Bank of India’s requirement to list the conglomerate, another move opposed by the Tata Trusts.
Tata Trusts, a group of charitable organizations that owns a 66% stake in Tata Sons, said that according to the articles of association of Tata Sons, both its nominee directors must approve the chairman’s appointment or reappointment.
