What Importers Need To Know As Tariff Refund Battles Begin
The Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs, invalidating those imposed under that authority by the Trump administration. This decision, made on Feb. 20, was the first of many dominoes to fall to shed light on the economic consequences associated with these tariff refunds. The next huge domino may have just fallen, with Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade overseeing the process for U.S. importers to pursue refunds on tariffs paid under the IEEPA as the government begins unwinding the unlawful tariffs, according to CBS News. While this may seem like great news in that some businesses and individuals may be getting money back, there are three key reasons why the situation is far more complicated than it might seem.
