When deciding where to build a career, a bigger city shouldn’t be the only place you look. While major coastal hubs may offer higher salaries (needed to offset the higher cost of living) and more room to climb the corporate ladder, new data from job searching platform Indeed suggests that some smaller cities present better odds of actually landing a job, which is increasingly important in today’s slow hiring market.

In its inaugural list of Best Cities for Work 2026, Indeed used public labor market data, as well as its own proprietary data, to rank 228 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas with 200,000 residents or more. Each metro area was ranked based on six pillars: job opportunity; compensation; job quality and security; career mobility; work-life and flexibility; and economic opportunity. Job opportunity and compensation carried the most weight because, according to Indeed, these two pillars are the preconditions for everything else. The other four pillars were weighed evenly when coming up with the final rankings.
