But as soon as you enter the virtual meeting, you realize that the only human sitting across from you is your reflection on the computer screen. If your gut told you to skedaddle away from an AI job interview, then you’re not alone—and you're not wrong.

How Common AI Interviews Actually Are

AI interviews are now the norm. It’s not a fringe experiment, and it’s certainly not something that happens occasionally. In fact, according to the Greenhouse 2026 Candidate AI Interview Report, which surveyed 2,950 active job seekers across the US, UK, Germany, Australia, and Ireland, 63%, nearly two-thirds, have actually been interviewed by AI. This number is up by 13 percentage points in just six months.

Why Candidates Are Walking From These Interviews

So why are so many people walking away? It’s not the technology, especially since many early career candidates utilize AI like second nature. But here’s what it is: it’s the secrecy, because according to the report by Greenhouse, 70% of candidates were never even told up front that AI would evaluate them. And 21% didn’t find out until they entered into the video conference room.
