There’s talk of a spring election as the Liberals, riding high in the polls, push for a majority government. The theory that they want an election soon is strengthened by their recent announcement of $12.4 billion in handouts, marketed as “the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit,” to approximately 12 million Canadians. If flamboyant distribution of billions of taxpayers’ dollars before an early election called to take advantage of strong poll numbers seems familiar, it’s because that’s what the Ontario PC government did almost exactly a year ago.

Apart from their good poll numbers, the federal Liberals’ case for more power — or even to stay in power at all — is underwhelming. Mark Carney has now been prime minister for 11 months. Despite making some changes, he has made little progress in reversing the ruinous policies of his predecessor, whom he advised.
