Mandatory digital ID cards are unnecessary and illiberal

Keir Starmer announced the roll out of mandatory digital ID cards for all UK citizens last week.

Instead of a musical fanfare, the response to the Prime Minister’s latest idea was the sound of sad trombones.

Like a moth attracted to bright lights, Keir Starmer appears to be mesmerised by regressive and unnecessary policies.

He appears to lack a moral compass and seems devoid of any political anchor. Instead, we have a series of political u-turns and ill-advised policies pulled out of a hat.

Forcing everyone to take part in a state-controlled identify scheme in order to go about their day to day lives wasn’t in Labour’s manifesto; indeed, Labour had previously ruled out compulsory ID.
