Understanding Fitna Al Khawarij Facade – OpEd
The resurgence of extremist ideologies under the guise of religious purity has led to devastating consequences for Pakistan, with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) embodying a modern-day manifestation of the Khawariji sect.
Historically, the Khawarij were known for their radical and violent interpretations of Islam, disregarding scholarly consensus, and declaring anyone who disagreed with them as non-Muslim. In today’s world, groups like the TTP have embraced this destructive ideology, falsely claiming to represent Islam and the Pashtun identity while engaging in heinous acts of terrorism. Their so-called jihad has done nothing but defile the image of Islam, destabilize Pakistan, and push the Pashtun people further into suffering.
One of the most pressing questions that must be asked of the TTP is: Do they believe they hold a divine monopoly over Islam? They have positioned themselves as self-proclaimed religious authorities, twisting Islamic teachings to justify their brutal actions. However, mainstream religious scholars, both in Pakistan and across the Muslim world, have categorically denounced their ideology as un-Islamic. The Quran and Sunnah emphasize consultation (Shura) and scholarly interpretation, yet the TTP arrogantly overrides centuries of Islamic scholarship to impose their distorted version of Islam. How can they justify their defiance of religious consensus and their disregard for the Quranic command of unity among Muslims?
The Quran clearly states:
“Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you” (4:59).
Pakistan, as an Islamic Republic, upholds Islamic values through its constitution and governance, making the TTP’s armed rebellion against the state a direct violation of Islamic injunctions. Renowned Islamic scholars, including those from Al-Azhar University, Jamia Binoria, and Darul Uloom Deoband, have issued fatwas (religious decrees) declaring the TTP’s militant activities as haram (forbidden). By disregarding these rulings, they expose their selective application of Islamic principles.
The TTP has not waged war against any invading force or oppressor; instead, it has directed its violence toward Pakistan’s people, soldiers, schools, and mosques. How can they claim to be fighting for Islam while killing fellow Muslims in markets, places of worship, and schools? Their indiscriminate violence contradicts the fundamental Quranic verse:
“Whoever kills a person [unjustly], it is as if he has killed all of humanity.” (5:32).
Despite this, they have bombed hundreds of mosques, murdered religious scholars who opposed their ideology, and launched suicide attacks on civilians. Their war is not for Islam but for power, control, and the financial benefits they receive from foreign sponsors. The TTP masks its violence under the banner of jihad, but their actions contradict the very essence of this Islamic principle. True jihad, as described in Islamic teachings, is a struggle for self-improvement, defense against oppression, and the spread of righteousness. It is not a license to kill innocent people, nor is it a war for political dominance. The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) and Pakistan’s Ulema Council have repeatedly stated that the TTP’s so-called jihad is nothing but a distortion of Islamic teachings.
If their actions truly qualified as jihad, then why have the most respected religious institutions in the Muslim world condemned them? Why do they fear scholarly debates and religious discourse, instead resorting to violence against those who challenge their views? Their jihad is nothing more than a tool to manipulate the vulnerable, deceive the uneducated, and sustain their power through bloodshed.
One of the most abhorrent aspects of the TTP’s operations is their exploitation of young children and brainwashing them into becoming suicide bombers. These innocent souls are misled into believing that detonating themselves in crowded spaces will grant them paradise. However, Islam explicitly prohibits suicide and the killing of civilians. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) strongly condemned suicide, stating:
“Whoever kills himself with something in this world will be punished with it on the Day of Judgment.” (Sahih Muslim 109)
Despite this, the TTP has orchestrated over 500 suicide attacks in Pakistan, killing thousands of innocent men, women, and children. Meanwhile, their leaders and their families live safely in Afghanistan, enjoying luxury while they send poor, uneducated children to their deaths. If they truly believed in their mission, why have none of their own sons or daughters volunteered for these so-called martyrdom missions?
The TTP falsely claims to be the defenders of the Pashtun people, yet their actions have destroyed Pashtun communities. How can they claim to be champions of Pashtun rights when their actions have only pushed their own people into poverty, suffering, and death? Instead of fostering education and development, they have tried to silence progress by banning girls’ education and targeting teachers. The assassination attempt on Malala Yousafzai was a stark example of their barbarism.
While the TTP claims to fight for Pakistan’s Islamic identity, their actions reveal deep ties to foreign intelligence agencies. Reports by Pakistan’s security agencies and global think tanks have revealed the financial and logistical support the TTP has received from external actors who seek to destabilize Pakistan. U.S. and Afghan intelligence leaks have confirmed that the TTP has operated freely in Afghanistan under the protection of hostile elements. This raises a fundamental question: Is it “halal” to betray your own country and people while working as mercenaries for foreign masters? The Quran commands loyalty to one’s homeland and the protection of innocent lives, yet the TTP operates as a tool for those who wish to weaken Pakistan. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned of a group of extremists who would emerge, claiming to be more religious than others but causing great harm to the Muslim Ummah. He described them as:
“They will recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through Islam as an arrow passes through its target.” (Sahih Bukhari 5057)
The TTP and similar extremist groups fit this description perfectly. They misinterpret Islam, impose their own radical beliefs, and kill fellow Muslims without hesitation. Their ideology is nothing but a repetition of the Khawariji fitna that the Prophet (PBUH) warned against. The TTP and its affiliates have no legitimacy—not in Islam, not among scholars, and not among the people. They must answer for their crimes and face the justice they have long evaded. The time has come to reject their terror and rebuild a Pakistan that upholds the true principles of Islam: peace, justice, and progress.
