In the fight against COVID-19, there is some reassuring good news. In a major new review, The Lancet (30 June 2026) concludes that currently approved mRNA vaccines are both safe and highly effective in preventing infectious diseases, most notably COVID19. These conclusions emerge from extensive laboratory research, clinical trial data, and realworld surveillance covering billions of administered doses. The researchers evaluate the scientific foundations of mRNA vaccine technology and its public health impact. More importantly, their assessment confirms that serious adverse effects remain extremely rare, while the benefits of vaccination—particularly protection against severe disease and death—are substantial. The researchers searched PubMed from Jan 1, 2000, to Dec 1, 2025, using the following search terms: “messenger RNA”, “mRNA”, “selfamplifying RNA”, “vaccines”, “lipid nanoparticles”, “mRNA vaccines”, and “COVID-19”. They searched ongoing clinical trials on ClinicalTrials.gov. They identified and reviewed potentially relevant articles in English, including reviews, clinical studies, conference abstracts, and case reports.

Across global datasets, reviews of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines demonstrate approximately 87% effectiveness against documented SARS-CoV-2 infection, 93% against hospitalisation, and 94% against mortality within the first 14–42 days after vaccination. Though protection wanes over time and is somewhat reduced in older adults and against the Omicron lineage (67% against infection and 72% against hospitalisation), booster doses reliably restore immunity.
