Redefining Power In The Era Of Cloud And Artificial Intelligence – OpEd
The collaboration between Pakistan and the Swiss-based DFINity Foundation to build sovereign cloud infrastructure and AI-native systems is not just a technical deal. It is a strategic digital step in the country. In an era where data control is the key to economic power, national security and technological prowess, the move by Pakistan can be seen as a sign of confidence, vision and awareness of the realities of digital life in the world.
Countries around the globe are reconsidering their reliance on external cloud-service providers. The information today is not just data, but infrastructure. Digital platforms have government records, identities of the citizens, financial systems, health databases, and national communications. By putting such systems on external infrastructure, countries are bound to expose themselves to legal, geopolitical and operational risks. The shift by Pakistan towards a sovereign cloud system is hence a logical and progressive step.
The cooperation between the Pakistan Digital Authority and DFINITY is expected to make sure that sensitive public data is under the jurisdiction of the country and allows tamper-resistant applications, AI-based services and secure digital governance. The partnership brings another model of decentralized and secure cloud architecture by facilitating the establishment of a Pakistan-specific subnet on the Internet Computer Platform. This project is not the seclusion of Pakistan in the global digital network. It is concerning enhancing its digital backbone without being disconnected in the world.
Sovereign cloud infrastructure offers more control to Pakistan over the manner in which data is stored, processed and controlled. Practically, it is seen as enhanced cybersecurity resilience, more transparent regulation and less dependence on external service providers, the priorities of which do not necessarily coincide with the national interests. In the case of a nation whose........
