When a crisis hits, it’s often the brave few who step forward, sounding the alarm to warn others. These are the whistleblowers, who put everything on the line to make sure the truth is heard. Unfortunately, in places where free speech is stifled, the consequences for speaking out are devastating. Take the story of Dr. Li Wenliang, who was a Chinese doctor who tried to warn the world about the coronavirus long before it became a global pandemic. His attempt to raise the alarm about the virus not only cost him his job, but it also ultimately cost him his life. His story is a tragic example of the dangers of censorship and of the incredible courage it takes to defy an oppressive system.

It was late December 2019 when Dr. Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, first started noticing something strange–several patients were coming in with symptoms of a pneumonia-like illness that looked eerily similar to the SARS virus. Worried about the potential for an outbreak, Li shared his concerns in a private chat with other doctors, urging them to take precautions.
