Uzbekistan’s President Pays Historic State Visit To Georgia – OpEd

On July 2–3, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev is paying a state visit to Georgia at the invitation of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. It is the first visit by an Uzbek head of state to Georgia in 23 years, and both sides are treating it as a turning point. Georgia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili called it a historic opportunity to bring relations to a new level and confirmed that a strategic cooperation agreement is being prepared for signing. 

The program began even before the president’s arrival. On July 1, Tbilisi hosted the Uzbekistan–Georgia Business Forum, which brought together around 70 Uzbek companies from construction, logistics, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and textiles with approximately 250 Georgian counterparts. The forum was opened by Georgia’s Minister of Economy Mariam Kvrivishvili and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investments, Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov. Alongside B2B meetings, participants also discussed one of the most ambitious ideas on creating a trade, logistics, and manufacturing hub in the Poti Free Industrial Zone on Georgia’s Black Sea coast.
