Column: Tree planting time in Arkansas

If you are going to plant a tree this year, now is the time. That's right and the reason is very simple because Arkansas usually has a hot and dry summer. Duh!!!! Well, what does a hot and dry summer have to do with planting trees? By planting trees in Mid-Winter, it gives the tree adequate time for it's roots to start developing, and getting your sapling through its first dry, hot Arkansas Summer is a key to having a healthy growing tree. Yes, I know I'm beating a dead horse to some folks, but bear with me because trees are one of Arkansas's greatest assets, and we are doing a terrible job in restoring and maintaining the once magnificent forest that once carpeted our state. It seems that our Settlers considered settling and taming the wilderness the first thing you did was cut down all the trees. Take a look at Ray Hanley's Sunday spot in the Democrat-Gazette and note bare city downtown streets and sidewalks in his pictures of historic towns. Of course, the settlers of our state, after clearing enough land for their settlement, never thought of trees having benefits, but of course they do, and the planting trees today has become one of the necessary and most effective ways to reverse Climate Change.
