The federal government’s undemocratic alcohol escalator tax is devastating Canada’s domestic alcohol industry.

With Prime Minister Mark Carney just having raised prices for Canadians by imposing a new wave of tariffs on U.S. goods entering Canada from the United States, there never has been a better time to axe the escalator tax.

A new research paper, released this week by Signal49 Research, highlights the impact the alcohol escalator tax has had on Canada’s beer industry since it was first introduced in 2017.

Over the past nine years, alcohol taxes have gone up automatically every April 1 in line with inflation. There has been no annual vote in Parliament. Politicians haven’t had to defend raising taxes on Canadians. Instead, alcohol taxes have risen each and every year, to a cumulative increase of 20 per cent, quietly and to little fanfare.
