It’s not Donald Trump’s map jokes or hockey memes that should worry Canadians. It’s what he’s signalling about trade.

Sure, those posts are annoying. They get under your skin, which is why Trump is posting them.

What should really worry Canadians is when he starts talking about banning Canadian products or devaluing the American dollar.

Those have real-world implications for the Canadian economy, for Canadian workers and their jobs. Over the weekend, Trump mused about both of those issues.

As Canadian counter-tariffs on American goods are set to take effect on Tuesday, tariffs of 15% to 50% on a range of goods worth some $27.6 billion, the Americans are plotting their next move. We could see additional tariffs on Canadian goods and the Americans are apparently considering product bans in retaliation for most Canadian provinces banning American booze.

The Americans already imposed a 50% tariff on imported Canadian alcohol. Now we could be looking at a ban.

Mostly, that would hit the spirits industry, which........
