Opinion: A job shouldn't be a disability benefit in Alberta

On July 2, Alberta began moving disability-income recipients into a new two-program system. People deemed permanently unable to work will remain on Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, or AISH. Others whose disabilities are judged to restrict, but not prevent, employment will receive support through the Alberta Disability Assistance Program, or ADAP.

The province presents ADAP as a pathway to employment. Recipients can earn more before their benefits are reduced, and they can retain health coverage at higher income levels. These are positive changes. Disabled Albertans should be able to work without immediately losing essential supports.
