U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Canada with 100 per cent tariffs over the weekend, a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Alberta is “a natural partner for the U.S.”

Bessent later told Fox News that Prime Minister Mark Carney, during a phone call with Trump on Monday, “was very aggressively walking back” some of his comments made at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last week.

In turn, Carney told reporters Tuesday he had a good conversation with Trump, but also that he “meant what I said” at the global gathering. He stressed Canada was the first country to understand changes in U.S. trade policy, and it’s responding by building partnerships abroad.
