Village hall row triggers resignations after safeguarding complaint fallout

A bitter dispute over the handling of complaints against one of its village hall volunteers has led to a series of resignations, exposing deep divisions in the community and leading to calls for an independent review.

Former Ringsfield Village Hall Community Council chairman Norman Belton, two fellow committee members, and a parish councillor have all stepped down amid the controversy surrounding volunteer Mark Whatley, who was removed from the hall earlier this year over safeguarding concerns.

The dispute centres on complaints made about Mr Whatley’s role at the village hall, where he was accused of allowing children into Ringsfield Village Hall while it was otherwise unoccupied and communicating with them through the hall’s CCTV system.

It led to a probe by Ringsfield and Weston Recreation Ground and Village Hall Charity, which then led to a slew of resignations in the village near Beccles.

Mr Whatley, 63, said the allegations had a devastating impact on him.
