Blow for campaign against service station expansion

Plans to double the size of the Gillingham Services on the A143/A146 roundabout were approved last year by South Norfolk Council despite strong opposition by locals.

The expansion would see a new Marks & Spencer shop, Greggs drive-through, farm shop, electric vehicle charging hub and six trade units.

As part of the strong opposition to the bid, the Friends of Gillingham campaign group had applied to the High Court seeking permission to apply for a Judicial Review.

After raising thousands of pounds to fund their legal fight, the court has refused to grant the permission they had hoped for.

Sue McCabe, the group's co-director said: "This is clearly not the ruling we were expecting and it has taken a little while for us to properly process and decide on next steps.

"The High Court's decision is not final at this stage and can be appealed by means of an oral hearing, although we note that this process will incur additional costs.

"The outcome of the oral hearing is usually determined on the day, so fingers crossed that in our next update we will have passed go onto a full Judicial Review."

Campaigners were able to challenge the decision in court after raising more than £10,000.

To prepare for the appeal hearing on Tuesday, March 24 the group is hoping to secure a further £1,500 to cover fees and legal costs.

The services station already has a petrol station, McDonald's, KFC, and Starbucks.

South Norfolk Council received dozens of objections to the scheme, including fears about increased noise and light pollution.

Ms McCabe added the group is steadfast in protecting the village's "green open spaces, biodiversity and local rural environment," and deeply appreciates the "support of many individuals and businesses" who have trusted them.
