Man hooked on prescription drugs smashed into pharmacy with hammer

Daniel Walpole, 29 and of Glebe Way, Norwich, admitted smashing into Wellbeing Pharmacy in Coltishall on January 19 and ransacking medicine.

Appearing at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court, he pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to steal.

Jacqueline Hanlon, prosecuting, said: "The defendant entered Wellbeing Pharmacy in Coltishall. He had a hammer and he broke a window to get in.

"He took several boxes and the chemists confirmed that the glass shop window was broken by him."

He stole numerous full boxes of prescription drugs including Codeine Phosphate and Diazepam.

James Burrows, mitigating, said: "It is not as straightforward as it seems.

"There were some addictions to prescribed medication.

"The ambulance service were out to attend to him."

The magistrates have ordered a pre-sentence report to be made.

Walpole will be sentenced on 10 April in Norwich.

He has been granted conditional bail, which includes not to go to Wellbeing Pharmacy.
