Michelle Bettles was 22 years old when she was murdered after last being seen in the red light district of Norwich during the early hours of Thursday, March 28 and Friday, March 29 in 2002.

Following the further sentencing of serial killer Steve Wright, who infamously murdered five women in Ipswich, Miss Bettles family has come forward pleading for the serial killer to break his silence if he knows anything.

Wright was sentenced earlier this month for the kidnapping and murder of Victoria Hall in 1999 in Trimley, and further sentenced for the attempted kidnapping of Emily Doherty the night before.

Mr Justice Bennathan sentenced Wright at the Old Bailey to life in prison with a minimum term of 40 years.

John Bettles, 70, has been searching for the answers as to who killed his daughter and said that Wright's smirk in court this month was "an insult".

Wright was born in Erpingham, Norfolk and had been the landlord of the Ferry Boat pub in Norwich during the late 1980s.

Speaking to The Mirror, Mr Bettles said: "Put us out of our misery, otherwise our sentence will continue until the day we die.

"We just want to know one way or another for our own peace of mind.

"The police always said that Steve Wright wasn’t in Norwich the day Michelle disappeared – but I don’t know how they can say that with 100 per cent certainty because you can be 60 miles away in just an hour.

"He was ruled out far too quickly."

On losing his daughter, he added: “A day doesn’t go by without myself and Denise, Michelle’s mum, talking about her.

"We laugh about things and remember her for the person she was.

"She was a very happy child, hugely intelligent and had university potential.

"She was gorgeous – when I used to walk out with her, to a restaurant or something, I used to feel so proud.”

Norfolk Constabulary said that Miss Bettles had not kept a pre-arranged appointment with a regular client of hers.

She worked as a prostitute and had arranged to meet the client close to home in the Dereham Road area, but never kept the appointment.

There was a series of sightings of Michelle in various locations in the red light district of Norwich by people who knew her, the last being at about midnight.

On the morning of March 31, 2002, her body was found in a woodland by the side of a country track known as Rush Meadow Road in Scarning, near Dereham and she had been strangled.

A murder investigation was launched, but the killer was never identified.

The case remains unsolved.
