Plans to turn former pub into a mosque are scrapped

The Norwich Muslim Centre withdrew its proposals to transform the Gatehouse in Dereham Road into a place of worship and community centre over fears it would result in "a long planning committee dominated by objectors”.

It comes after officials at Norwich City Council recommended the plans be refused.

The scheme to convert the building, which had operated as a pub until 2023, sparked a wave of objections including from officials over concerns it would cause “unacceptable harm” to the building, traffic and parking issues and be a flood risk.

The campaigning group Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) had also protested against the plans saying it should remain as a pub.

The Norwich Muslim Centre, which is a registered charity, continue to own the site and want to hold talks with officials at the council about the building and what it can be used for.
