Dereham Town Council is seeking to track down the organiser before Saturday's event to ensure it does not take place.

In a Facebook post, the authority said it had contacted police over fears the vigil would be "upsetting to many residents" and could leave people "less sympathetic to this particular cause”.

The gathering is due to run from 10am to 11am.

John Adams, who is though to be the organiser, said it was being held to draw attention to what he described as the "ongoing genocide" and "the bulldozed British war graves in Gaza by the Israeli occupying military".

Mr Adams, 81, did not respond when approached by this newspaper about the backlash his vigil had triggered.
