Parking wars! Fed-up folk demand fix for 'obstacle course' road

People living in George Borrow Road, a residential street off The Avenues, have been fighting for parking spaces outside their homes for years.

It has resulted in people cramming their cars onto the grass verges which in turn creates blind spots for drivers.

In the recent weeks, the road has become "an obstacle course" and neighbours want Norfolk County Council to introduce parking permits in the street.

David Archer, who lives in George Borrow Road, said: "Part of the problem is there are lots of HMOs nearby.

"They have multiple cars and it results in people parking on the verges.

"Some people park inconsiderately and stop drivers from being able to see if the road is clear. Others leave their cars parked for weeks at a time.

"We don't struggle to park - we are lucky to be able to park our two cars on our drive - but, it has become a bit of an obstacle course, an inconvenience.

"The verges are in a dreadful condition."

To park in The Avenues between 10am and 4pm between Bluebell Road and George Borrow Road, drivers need a permit.

Mr Archer said three years ago he voted for the council to extend the permit parking boundary to include George Borrow Road but it didn't get approved.

Bert Bremmer, who lives in nearby Morello Close and is a former Labour councillor for Norwich City Council, said: "I think it's disgusting.

"The problem has been ignored for the last two or three years.

"The council need to install more bollards.

"Some cars belong to local residents, some are students.

"Around 10 years ago, the council upgraded the cycle paths in The Avenues, so much work went into improving the area.

"This, along with putting restrictions in part of the road, stopped the issue."

A spokesman from Norfolk County Council said: “There are currently no plans to introduce permit parking in The Avenues.

"If any residents do want a change in the parking situation in their area, we’d recommend they contact us directly in the first instance or speak to their local council member."
