Georgia Shackleton, who lives in Norwich, has recorded songs in memory of her distant cousin Sir Ernest Shackleton.

The explorer became a household name for leading expeditions across the Antarctic in the early 20th century.

In her new album, Ms Shackleton uses a violin made from the floorboards from Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Edinburgh home.

She said: "The link to Shackleton is through my dad's name.

"I have been working on an album and I have used a violin made from the floorboards from his house.

"I live in Norwich but am originally from the Fens.

"I recorded one of the songs on board the Discovery boat in Dundee.

"It was a different process from how I would usually work and write music."

Steve Burnett, a conservationist, built the violin and in 2022, Ms Shackleton decided to contact him about it.

She said: "He let me borrow it.

"While I had the violin, Ian Morrison, a descendant of one of Shackleton's crewmates, got in contact with me.

"He is the grandson of the chief engineer who worked on the Morning Relief Vessel.

"On the boat, lots of music was written.

"Ian Morrison handed me some songs that were played on board."

Ms Shackleton is also in a band called the Shackleton Trio.

"We have just finished the launch tour, and the album was released on February 27," she said.

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

Ernest Henry Shackleton was born on 15 February 1874 in County Kildare, Ireland.

He qualified as a master mariner after serving in the merchant navy as a teenager.

The Anglo-Irish explorer is best known for leading the Endurance expedition, renowned for its remarkable tale of survival after the ship became trapped in Antarctic ice.

In 1901, Shackleton was chosen to go on the Antarctic expedition led by British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott on the ship Discovery.
