Biddy's Tea Room in Lower Goat Lane has become a Norwich institution, known for its tea blends, ginormous cakes and indulgent afternoon teas.

"I could never have predicted we’d still be here 15 years later, on the same lane we started in, albeit in a larger space," Charlie Buchan, owner, reflected.

"I certainly never thought I’d be sharing that with some regulars who have been with us all that time - and some staff too!"

Ms Buchan first started the business in the space above 15 Lower Goat Lane, taking over the whole site in 2013.

She relocated from one side of the street to the other in 2024, doubling in size and creating an on-site shop for tea supplier, Black Dog Teas.

"I’m incredibly proud of our offering, particularly the decision to make everything in-house and eventually open our own bakery," Ms Buchan said.

"I’m also proud that we outgrew our old site and made the move across the road.

"I think the thing I’m proudest of, though, is the staff I get to work with."

However, the recent pressures on the hospitality industry have proved challenging.

"I worry that recent law changes may mean hospitality will no longer be the gentle entry point into the workplace for students and young people that it has traditionally been," Ms Buchan explained.

"It’s widely talked about, but rising stock costs, VAT, rates, rent and utilities are decimating what was already a very small profit margin.

"I’m not sure what the next 15 years will bring, but I do hope we’re still here in some form.

"I adore Norwich and the Lanes are by far my favourite part of the city."

The tea room is marking the special occasion with a flash sale on Friday, March 6.
