Diana Heuvel, who campaigned to retrieve a three-panel painting of Plantation Garden from the Vauxhall Centre, is now at a loss about where it will go.

Mrs Heuvel called on Norfolk County Council, who owns the building, to let her save the painting, which stretches 26ft in length and 6ft 7inches in height, after speculation the building was going to be demolished and the artwork lost forever.

But after the council said it would grant her access to remove Antony James' piece, Mrs Heuvel's latest hurdle is finding its next home.

She said: "I'm yet to go and inspect the condition of the painting but I don't know where it's going to go.

"I've asked the Cathedral and the hospital and I've got more ideas of others to contact but the painting is just too big and to reframe it would be very expensive.

"So my enthusiasm is wearing a bit thin."

The giant painting is believed to have been unveiled at the centre at the top of Chapelfield Road where it has remained for the last 38 years.

The painting is a panoramic view of the public garden, which dates back to the mid-1800s when it was transformed from a chalk quarry by Henry Trevor.

But Mrs Heuvel, who is also a trustee for the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society - a 70-year-old charity that promotes contemporary art and artists working in the county - jumped to its rescue amid concerns Norfolk County Council would demolish the building.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "Options for the building are still being reviewed and there is currently no final decision on next steps for the building."
