Major restoration in the works for Norfolk's largest Broad
Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) will use the funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to begin detailed planning for a programme of habitat restoration, floodplain reconnection and upgraded visitor facilities across the reserve.
The project includes the restoration of 45 hectares of newly acquired wet grazing marsh at Whittle’s Marsh, creating improved conditions for breeding waders such as lapwing, snipe and redshank.
The trust also plans to reconnect 63 hectares of drained land within the reedbeds to Hickling Broad, re‑establishing a more natural and resilient floodplain.
Water levels will be raised across a further 45 hectares of marsh, benefiting rare species including the bittern, bearded tit and Norfolk’s iconic swallowtail........
