Farmers handed red diesel tax cut as Middle East war sends fuel costs rocketing

The chancellor has confirmed the current 5p fuel duty cut will remain in place for the rest of 2026, while the duty for rebated red diesel for farmers and other eligible users will also be cut by more than a third, from 10.18p to 6.48p per litre, from June 15 until the end of the year.

The government said the "timely and targeted" measures aimed to lower business costs at "a difficult time when red diesel prices are around 50pc more than their pre-crisis levels".

Fuel is one of the biggest operating costs for many agricultural businesses, particularly during peak machinery, transport and harvesting periods.
