Locals winning battle to save ancient village pond laid bare by drought

While more than 100 carp perished as water levels fell in the lake at Great Massingham, near King's Lynn, a similar number have now been rescued.

A mud dam has been built enclosing a corner of Scotsman's Pit, so fish rescued from its toxic silt can recover before dredging work resumes.

While some of the mud has been removed from the margins, a machine with a longer reach is now needed to clear further out into the water, with work due to start in a few days' time.

"We've got a dam in place and we're trying to save as many fish as we can before D-Day, which is August 17," said Matt Bundock, a local builder who has taken a week off work........
