Norfolk village set for more homes despite traffic fears

West Norfolk Council has agreed permission in principle for "four to six" new properties in Terrington St Clement, near King's Lynn.

Detailed proposals must now be drawn up for the site, on Wanton Lane, and approved before work can begin.

People living along the lane said the development would bring extra traffic past their homes.

"Change is inevitable and demand requires further development," one posted on the council's planning portal.

"My concern however would be in regard to the road width which is single track in the immediate area adjacent to the proposed development."

A neighbour added: "The country lane has got busier and busier over the past few years and it's not going to help having more development."

And another said: "We have got too many houses being built in Terrington. This is a village not a town."

Residents also complained of low water pressure in the area and being overlooked by the new homes.

A highways officer also objected, saying the road was narrow in places, meaning pedestrians were "forced to compete for space with vehicle traffic".

A planning officer's report said "technical matters" such as safe access to and from the site would be dealt with at the next stage of the process.

It said the development was "acceptable in principle" because the one-acre site which is currently used as a paddock was large enough to allow for gaps between properties.

It added: "The proposed land use would unlikely lead to significant adverse impacts on the neighbouring residents, the surrounding area being in residential use and subject to the technical details it could be possible to avoid overlooking, overshadowing and loss of light."
