PIERCE SWEENEY IS THE CLUB CAPTAIN OF EXETER CITY FC

With four more points in the bag since I last put pen to paper, we’re beginning to put a bit of distance between ourselves and the bottom four.

After winning 2-0 at home to Mansfield last Tuesday, and drawing 1-1 with Rotherham on Saturday, we’re now 16th – eight points clear of Burton in the final relegation spot, with a game in hand.

While I didn’t make the long journey to South Yorkshire, I was watching on Grecian and thought we were good value for at least a point. Certainly, it would have been a really good watch for a neutral and, on another day, might easily have finished 3-3.

I thought we were the better side in the opening 45 minutes and ought really to have gone in ahead at the interval. So, it was a big blow to see Reece James [not that one] put the home side ahead just seconds before the half-time whistle sounded.

Truth be told, we didn’t play as well after the break. However, some resolute defending kept us in the game and allowed Alex Hartridge to fire us level in the 56th minute. Amazingly, that was Al’s first league goal for the club on what was his 139th appearance. That said, it was a very tidy finish – firing home on the half volley, with his wrong foot, after Ed Turns had seen an effort blocked.
