The Creativity Question: Are Schools Still Fit for Purpose?
The global education debate was fundamentally reshaped in 2006 when Sir Ken Robinson delivered his now-famous TED Talk, Do Schools Kill Creativity? The 19-minute address, later viewed by over 100 million people across platforms, challenged one of the most deeply embedded assumptions in modern schooling: that academic ability is best measured through standardized, narrowly defined subjects.
Robinson’s argument was simple but disruptive. He suggested that modern education systems, rather than cultivating creativity, often suppress it. In doing so, they prepare students for a world that no longer exists. Nearly two decades later, as artificial intelligence, automation, and digital economies reshape global labor markets, his concerns appear even more relevant.
To understand the current crisis in education, it is necessary to examine its origins. Most modern schooling systems are products of the Industrial Revolution and the Prussian administrative model. They were designed not to nurture independent thinkers, but to produce disciplined workers for factories and bureaucracies.
The logic was straightforward: industrial economies required large numbers of individuals who could follow instructions, maintain schedules, and perform repetitive tasks with precision. Schools, therefore, adopted a similar structure. The echoes of this system remain visible today. Students are grouped by age rather than ability. The day is divided into fixed periods marked by bells. Subjects are compartmentalized.
Compliance is rewarded, while deviation is often discouraged. Although the global economy has moved far beyond factory-based production, the schooling model has largely remained unchanged. One of Robinson’s most influential ideas was the concept of the “hierarchy of subjects.” Across most education systems regardless of geography or economic status an implicit ranking of disciplines persists.
At the top are mathematics and natural sciences, widely perceived as the most “useful” for economic success. Below them are languages and humanities. At the bottom sit the arts: music, drama, and visual expression. This hierarchy reflects a deeper assumption: that intelligence is primarily logical and numerical. The consequence is predictable.
