What We Know About the Deadly ICE Shooting in Maine
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man, in Biddeford, Maine, Monday morning, an incident that was first confirmed by local officials. While the Department of Homeland Security asserts that the federal agent opened fire because they were “fearing for public safety,” a Maine senator is now claiming that the Guerrero is not believed to have been the target of the ICE operation, citing conversations with Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Monday’s shooting is now the second ICE-involved shooting in a matter of days, after an ICE agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Texas last week despite him not being the agency’s target for arrest. Here’s what we know about the shooting that occurred in Maine.
Shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, who represents Biddeford, confirmed that a shooting had occurred that morning. “A person was killed. ICE was involved. State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well,” he wrote on Facebook. “These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me.”
Video obtained by the Portland Press Herald shows a white vehicle driving in circles as two agents follow alongside the car on the outside, though it’s unclear if the footage was taken prior to the shooting or after:
