Mamdani Is Making Those City-Owned Grocery Stores Sound Pretty Good

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced new details about his administration’s plan to open municipal grocery stores in each of the city’s boroughs, revealing that shoppers can expect a sizable savings on key food staples once the stores are operational.

Speaking at a Brooklyn food-distribution center for the Campaign Against Hunger on Monday, July 27, the mayor said the five planned city-owned grocery stores will offer a 30 percent discount on essential items including fresh produce, meat, and seafood as well as fundamental goods like milk, bread, and cheese. In a press release, the city estimated that the cheaper prices will mean savings of about $90 a month, or approximately $1,000 a year, for the average shopper.
