In a series of closely watched primary elections that doubled as the first true test of Zohran Mamdani’s growing political movement, the mayor’s endorsed slate of allies and fellow democratic socialists swept to victory, securing open seats and ousting incumbents in a continuation of the political earthquake that sent Mamdani to City Hall.

Within an hour of polls closing, former comptroller Brad Lander and Claire Valdez, a NYC-DSA endorsed assemblymember, secured the Democratic nominations in their races. Lander handily beat two-term congressman Dan Goldman, as was widely predicted, while Valdez won a surprisingly lopsided victory in the race to succeed retiring congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. In the most stunning result of the evening, community organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier edged out five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Not all of the night’s contests sent demonstrative statements of change. Assemblymember Micah Lasher will succeed his one-time boss Representative Jerry Nadler, whose open seat attracted an enormous range of candidates, from state legislators and Trump critics to a Kennedy scion.

New York’s results are a major boon for Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America, and will serve word of warning for Democratic incumbents seeking to remain in power. Here are how things played out in the four key districts Tuesday night:
